Why Packaging is important in Merchandising?

One of the important aspects of merchandising that is often overlooked is packaging. There is a misconception that just by putting the product in a box that can be decorated with colorful designs is enough for it to sell. Today customers look for attractive packaging and often buy products which are packed in an innovative and safe way. There are various types of packaging such as wax packing, contract packing especially for edibles, and vacuum packing to preserve flavor, while poultry boxes for eggs.

It is quite common that product fails due to improper packaging. A proper market research needs to be done before lying on type of packing. It is a good idea to carry an extensive market research when deciding on packaging design especially if it is targeting to a worldwide market.

Some products require single-serve packing while others require multi-serve packing. Women prefer easy-to-carry sizes that place in their purses, but older people may only care for easy-to-open packaging designs. Many manufacturers adapt to the market by considering which package size is more popular.

People want a package which is easy-to-open and maintains the safety of product as well. A good packaging always adds an extra value to the product image. Many product manufacturers are redeveloping their packages to cater to different customer needs and preferences.

Always try to keep the package simple and product information visible. Sometime overloaded product information can reduce the visual impact.
